Liberian Dance Troupe performs for Safe Haven

During the recent Ghana Education and Outreach Tour the Safe Haven Project Team had the honor of visiting the Liberian Refugee Camp in Ghana. During the visit, the team presented the educational tour presentation to refugees of all ages. During the visit, the Liberian Dance Troupe presented this dance in honor of the visit.

Safe Haven was thrilled to have the opportunity to visit this camp. It took many years and many conversations to open the door to the visit.

The Team from the Safe Haven Project Ghana Education and Outreach Tour 2008 has returned safely to the US. The trip was a resounding success.
The following video is part one of a two part interview with students at the Zion School upon completing their attendance at an educational presentation. Part two is above.

During the Ghana Education and Outreach Tour, the team visited many schools. One in particular included Muslim teens. The experience proved very powerful for the team in that it gave the opportunity to share important HIV education information and open the door for discussions of acceptance, tolerance and understanding - not only for people with HIV, but also between people of all beliefs and cultures.

Below is a brief video taken on the ground in Ghana, in which a wonderful group of girls sang a song to Chelsea, one of our team of educators.

Greetings,

Safe Haven has successfully arrived and has begun programming in Ghana!

We have visited with the oldest orphanage in Ghana, the Osu Childrens Home and there are 160 beautiful kids and youth up to 22 there.

We had a chance to organize a very energetic soccer tourney for the kids, Tracy and Denise did coloring and art with the little ones, Denise played soccer with the best of them, and Edward and Chelsea shared their life with HIV with the older teens and young adults. We then shared time in the nursery with a very sad and tough journey through that area. These babies may never see families and are in dire situations. We had the good fortune of holding many and making many smile (babies to 3 yrs). We will have future discussions of Safe Haven volunteers being able to spend 2-3 months at a time in the orphange!

Monday begins our outreach to youth in schools with an estimated 10,000+ to be reached. Our UNAIDS and Ghana AIDS Commission friends are highly supportive.

We will venture out to Humjibre for 3 days for those wanting to go to the village with me and spend time with the wonderful people of this small rural village.

The computers are arriving safely with warm regards back!

Keep us in your thoughts and prayers throughout, there is much happening and this is the real definition of safe haven, being available and changing the lives of the most vulnerable we come across through love and compassion..without fear..

The 2008 Tour Begins

Thank you for visiting the blogsite for the 2008 "Ghana Education and Outreach Tour."
Over the next few weeks, the tour team will post their comments and experiences here for all to share.

UPDATE:

As of this morning, David Butler (Executive Producer of the Tour and Founder and CEO of Safe Haven) had arrived in Amsterdam for a short layover before flying into Accra, the capital of Ghana in West Africa.

Once settled in, Dave will be connecting with our partners on the ground in Ghana to prepare for the arrival for the team that will tour Ghana.
